Students of Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED), Ijagun, Ogun State, went on a rampage to protest the death of their female colleague who was crushed by a truck on the Benin-Ore Lagos Expressway.
The victim identified as Kofoworola Tobiat Kuku was said to have been knocked down by a truck driver, who escaped from the scene. It was learnt that the victim was on her way to school on a commercial motorcycle when the sad incident occurred.
Terrified by the incident, TASUED students mobilized themselves and barricaded the busy expressway with logs and made bonfires on the high way to express their displeasure over the death of their fellow student.
Their action was said to have prevented both humans and vehicular movements along the expressway. The protest lasted for several hours despite entreaties by security operatives and community leaders in Ijebu land.
The State Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), Clement Oladele, confirmed the crash. Oladele, however, stated that the commercial motorcyclist, who conveyed the victim, escaped death by a whisker.
At press time, the state’ Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, said the Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Iliyasu, has ordered immediate deployment of anti-riot policemen to the area, adding that no arrest had been made yet.
