Headline: "UN Chief Urges Global Action to Address Climate Change, as Report Reveals Devastating Consequences"
Date: March 25, 2023
New York, USA - United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres today called for immediate and collective action to address the devastating consequences of climate change, as a new report revealed that the world is on track to miss the 1.5°C target set by the Paris Agreement.
The report, released by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), highlights the alarming rate at which the planet is warming, with 2022 being the sixth-hottest year on record. The report also warns that the consequences of inaction will be catastrophic, including more frequent and severe heatwaves, droughts, and storms, as well as devastating impacts on ecosystems and biodiversity.
"Climate change is not just an environmental issue, it is a human rights issue, a development issue, and a security issue," said Mr. Guterres. "We are running out of time to take action. We must work together to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, transition to renewable energy, and protect vulnerable communities."
The report also highlights the disproportionate impact of climate change on vulnerable populations, including small island developing states, least developed countries, and indigenous peoples.
"The science is clear, the consequences are dire, and the time for action is now," said Dr. Inger Andersen, Executive Director of UNEP. "We must work together to reduce emissions, protect biodiversity, and ensure a sustainable future for all."
