Tag human development index
The Human Development Index (HDI) is a statistical tool used to measure a country's development based on three dimensions:
- Life Expectancy (LE): measured by the average number of years a person can expect to live.
- Education (ED): measured by the expected years of schooling and the gross enrollment ratio in education.
- Gross National Income (GNI) per capita (GNI): measured by the total income of a country's citizens, adjusted for purchasing power parity (PPP).
The HDI is a composite index that ranges from 0 to 1, with higher values indicating better human development. The index is calculated by combining the three dimensions using the following formula:
HDI = (LE + ED + GNI) / 3
Here are the HDI values for some countries:
High Human Development (HDI ≥ 0.8):
- Norway: 0.954
- Switzerland: 0.946
- Iceland: 0.938
- Denmark: 0.935
- Netherlands: 0.933
Medium Human Development (HDI = 0.5-0.799):
- Brazil: 0.759
- South Africa: 0.716
- Mexico: 0.774
- Turkey: 0.767
- Poland: 0.855
Low Human Development (HDI < 0.5):
- Niger: 0.354
- Central African Republic: 0.364
- Chad: 0.364
- Democratic Republic of the Congo: 0.387
- Burundi: 0.394
The HDI is a useful tool for comparing the development levels of different countries and identifying areas where improvements can be made.
