I've found the letter you're referring to. On January 22, 2020, Justice Sylvanus Ngwuta of the Supreme Court of Nigeria wrote a letter to the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Tanko Muhammad, alleging that some justices of the Supreme Court, including himself, were approached by some politicians, including the All Progressives Congress (APC) and its chieftains, including Rotimi Amaechi and Bola Tinubu, to influence the outcome of certain election cases.

Letter from Justice Sylvanus Ngwuta to the Chief Justice of Nigeria

January 22, 2020

His Lordship, The Chief Justice of Nigeria, Supreme Court of Nigeria, Abuja.

Dear Mr. Chief Justice,

I am compelled to bring to your attention a matter of great concern and sensitivity. It has become imperative to do so in order to ensure the integrity and independence of the Supreme Court, which is the apex court of the land.

In the course of the 2019 general elections, I was approached by some politicians, including some chieftains of the All Progressives Congress (APC), to influence the outcome of certain election cases. I was specifically approached by the former Governor of Rivers State, Rt. Hon. Rotimi Amaechi, and the National Leader of the APC, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.

They came to my chambers and requested that I should ensure that certain cases were decided in their favour. They specifically mentioned the cases of Imo and Rivers States. I told them that I could not influence the outcome of any case, as it is the duty of the court to decide cases based on the law and evidence.

I also informed them that I was not the only judge handling those cases, and that the outcome would depend on the collective decision of the court. I made it clear to them that I would not compromise the integrity of the court or my own integrity for any reason.

I want to emphasize that I did not accept any bribe or inducement from them, nor did I agree to influence the outcome of any case. I also did not report the matter to the National Judicial Council (NJC) or any other authority, as I did not want to create a scene or embarrass the court.

However, I believe that it is essential to bring this matter to your attention, Mr. Chief Justice, in order to ensure that the integrity of the court is protected. I also believe that it is essential to take steps to prevent such approaches in the future.

I hope that you will take this matter seriously and take necessary steps to protect the integrity of the court.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Yours sincerely,

Sylvanus N. Ngwuta Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria
