Striking non academic staff unions threaten to disrupt 2018 utme
It appears that there was a potential disruption to the 2018 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) due to a strike by non-academic staff unions.
According to reports, the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) had threatened to disrupt the 2018 UTME if their demands were not met. The unions were seeking improved working conditions, better salaries, and the implementation of the 2009 agreement between the unions and the federal government.
The unions had given the government a 14-day ultimatum to address their grievances, and if their demands were not met, they would embark on a strike that would disrupt academic activities, including the UTME.
However, it appears that the strike was averted at the last minute, as the government and the unions reached a compromise agreement. The agreement included the payment of outstanding allowances to the unions, the implementation of the 2009 agreement, and the establishment of a committee to look into the unions' demands.
As a result, the 2018 UTME was able to proceed without any major disruptions.
