Spanish super cup new format
The Spanish Super Cup, also known as the Supercopa de España, is an annual football competition in Spain that pits the winners of the La Liga and the Copa del Rey against each other. In 2020, the format of the competition was changed to a new format, which is as follows:
New Format (2020-present)
- The competition will feature four teams: the winners of La Liga and the Copa del Rey, as well as the two best teams that finish in the La Liga table, excluding the top two teams.
- The competition will be played in a single-elimination format, with the semifinals and final being played as a single match.
- The semifinals will be played at a neutral venue, with the winners advancing to the final.
- The final will be played at a neutral venue, with the winner being crowned the Spanish Super Cup champion.
Changes from the previous format
- The previous format featured a round-robin group stage, followed by a final match between the top two teams in the group.
- The new format eliminates the group stage and replaces it with a single-elimination format, which is expected to lead to more exciting and competitive matches.
First edition under the new format
The first edition of the Spanish Super Cup under the new format was played in 2020, with Real Madrid winning the title by defeating Athletic Bilbao 4-1 in the final.
Future editions
The new format is expected to be used for the foreseeable future, with the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) having announced that the competition will continue to be played in this format until at least 2025.
