Singapore elected president without vote
I think there may be some confusion here!
In Singapore, the President is not elected through a direct vote by the people. Instead, the President is elected through an electoral college system, where the members of the electoral college are chosen by various groups, including:
- The Members of Parliament (MPs)
- The Mayors of the 5 municipalities
- The Chief Clerks of the Supreme Court and the State Courts
- The Judges of the Supreme Court and the Court of Appeal
- The Cabinet Ministers
These members of the electoral college vote to elect the President, who serves a six-year term. The President is required to be a Singaporean citizen who is at least 45 years old and has been a Singaporean citizen for at least 10 years.
The President's role is largely ceremonial, with some limited powers, such as:
- Signing bills into law
- Appointing judges and other high-ranking officials
- Serving as the symbolic head of state
- Playing a role in the country's defense and security
The current President of Singapore is Halimah Yacob, who was elected in 2017 through the electoral college system.
