REJECT PRIVATIZATION OF WATER SECTOR, GROUP URGES LAGOS SPEAKER

Lagos, Nigeria - A coalition of civil society organizations, community groups, and water activists has urged the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, to reject any attempt to privatize the water sector in the state.

The group, under the auspices of the Lagos Water Sector Reform Coalition, made the call in a letter to the Speaker, citing the numerous negative consequences of privatization on the provision of clean and affordable water to the people of Lagos.

According to the coalition, privatization of the water sector would lead to increased water prices, reduced access to water for the poor and vulnerable, and the erosion of public control over a vital public service.

"We urge you to reject any attempt to privatize the water sector in Lagos," the letter reads. "Privatization of water is a recipe for disaster, and we cannot afford to sacrifice the health and well-being of our people for the benefit of private companies."

The coalition also highlighted the success of the public water sector in Lagos, which has provided clean and affordable water to millions of people in the state. "The public water sector has been able to provide water to all corners of the state, including rural areas, without compromising on quality and affordability," the letter stated.

The group also expressed concern over the lack of transparency and accountability in the privatization process, citing the lack of public consultation and the secrecy surrounding the negotiations with private companies.

"We urge you to prioritize the interests of the people of Lagos and reject any attempt to privatize the water sector," the letter concluded. "We are willing to work with you to develop a sustainable and equitable water sector that serves the needs of all Lagosians."

The Lagos Water Sector Reform Coalition is a coalition of civil society organizations, community groups, and water activists working to promote sustainable and equitable water sector reform in Lagos State.
