Psalm 22 good news bible

Here is Psalm 22 in the Good News Bible (GNB):

Psalm 22

My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?

Why are you so far away when I need you most? Don't turn a deaf ear to my cry for help! I cry out to you, Lord, but you don't answer. I call out to you, but you don't come. My God, my God, why have you abandoned me? Why are you so far away when I need you most?

All who see me laugh at me. They sneer and shake their heads. "Look at him! He trusts in the Lord— let the Lord rescue him! Let him be relieved and not suffer!" But you are my rock, my shield, my savior, the one who helps me. You are my God, and I praise you. You are my God, and I praise you.

In you, Lord, I have taken refuge. I have said to the Lord, "You are my Lord, my God, my Savior!" All my hope is in you, Lord, my Savior, my God. Do not be far from me, Lord, my God, and do not turn away from me. Come quickly and answer me, for my heart is full of trouble.

My enemies surround me. They are closing in on me like a pack of dogs. They are cutting me off, and I am alone. They pierce my hands and my feet. I can count every one of my bones. They stare at me and sneer. They divide my clothes among them, and they cast lots for my garment.

But you, Lord, do not be far away. My strength and my salvation— come quickly to help me. Rescue me from the sword, from the claws of the wicked. Save me from the lion's mouth. You are my hope, my trust, my Savior, my God.

I will proclaim your name to my brothers and sisters. In the congregation I will praise you. You who fear the Lord, praise him! All you descendants of Jacob, honor him! Revere him, all you descendants of Israel! For he has not despised or scorned the suffering of the one who was afflicted, nor has he hidden his face from him, but has listened to his cry for help.

You will see what I have suffered. You will see what they have done to me. You will see and you will pray for those who are against me. "May you, Lord, save the king! May you answer us when we call!" Then I will proclaim your name to my brothers and sisters.

This psalm is often referred to as a "messianic psalm" because it is believed to be a prophecy about the suffering and death of Jesus Christ. Many of the verses in this psalm are quoted in the New Testament as being fulfilled in Jesus' crucifixion.
