Nipost to embark on e commerce and e government services in 2017 minister of communications
According to the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) Act, the Minister of Communications in 2017, Adebayo Shittu, announced plans to transform NIPOST into a digital organization, focusing on e-commerce and e-government services.
In a statement, the Minister said that the transformation was aimed at positioning NIPOST as a key player in the digital economy, leveraging on its existing infrastructure and network to provide a range of digital services to Nigerians.
Some of the e-commerce and e-government services planned by NIPOST included:
- E-commerce platform: NIPOST planned to establish an e-commerce platform that would enable Nigerians to buy and sell goods online, leveraging on its existing postal network.
- Digital payment system: NIPOST planned to introduce a digital payment system that would enable Nigerians to make payments for various services, including utility bills, taxes, and other government services.
- E-government services: NIPOST planned to provide e-government services, such as online registration for government services, payment of taxes, and access to government information.
- Digital identity verification: NIPOST planned to introduce a digital identity verification system that would enable Nigerians to verify their identities online, making it easier to access various government services.
- Online postal services: NIPOST planned to introduce online postal services, including online tracking and monitoring of parcels, and online payment for postal services.
The Minister also announced plans to establish a digital innovation hub at NIPOST, which would serve as a platform for startups and entrepreneurs to develop and test their digital products and services.
The transformation of NIPOST into a digital organization was seen as a major step towards promoting digital inclusion and economic growth in Nigeria, and was expected to create new opportunities for Nigerians to access various services and do business online.
