Nigeria army denies killing protesting ipob members
The Nigerian Army has denied allegations that its personnel killed members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) during a protest in the southeastern state of Abia.
According to reports, IPOB members were protesting against the arrest and detention of their leader, Nnamdi Kanu, when they were allegedly attacked by the army. The protesters claimed that several people were killed and many others injured in the clash.
However, in a statement issued by the Nigerian Army, the military denied the allegations, saying that its personnel were not involved in the incident.
"The Nigerian Army wishes to categorically deny the false and misleading information being circulated on social media that its personnel killed IPOB members during a protest in Abia State," the statement read.
The army claimed that the protest was peaceful until some hoodlums and miscreants infiltrated the crowd and began to vandalize property and attack innocent civilians.
"The Nigerian Army was called in to restore order and maintain law and order, and our personnel were able to do so without any loss of life or injury," the statement added.
The army also accused IPOB of using the protest as a cover to perpetrate violence and disrupt public peace.
"We urge the public to disregard the false information being spread by IPOB and other mischievous elements, and to remain calm and peaceful," the statement concluded.
The denial by the Nigerian Army has been met with skepticism by many, who claim that the military has a history of using excessive force against peaceful protesters. The incident has sparked widespread outrage and calls for an investigation into the allegations.
IPOB has also denied the army's claims, saying that its members were brutally attacked and killed by the military. The group has called for an international investigation into the incident and has threatened to take further action if the government fails to address their demands.
The incident has further escalated tensions between the Nigerian government and IPOB, which has been pushing for independence for the Igbo people in southeastern Nigeria. The group has been accused of violence and terrorism by the government, while IPOB claims that it is fighting for the rights of the Igbo people.
