Job Summary:
The News Director is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the news department, including planning, producing, and delivering news content to the public. The News Director is the chief editor of the news department and is responsible for ensuring that all news content meets the highest standards of quality, accuracy, and fairness.
Key Responsibilities:
- Plan, coordinate, and supervise the production of news programs, including newscasts, special reports, and documentaries
- Oversee the assignment and supervision of reporters, anchors, and other news staff
- Develop and maintain relationships with sources, including government officials, experts, and other newsmakers
- Ensure that all news content is accurate, fair, and balanced, and that it meets the highest standards of journalism
- Coordinate with other departments, such as sales, marketing, and engineering, to ensure that news content is integrated into the overall station strategy
- Manage the news budget and ensure that expenses are within budget
- Supervise the editing and production of news content, including writing, reporting, and video editing
- Ensure that all news content is delivered on time and meets the highest standards of quality
- Develop and implement strategies to increase ratings and revenue for the news department
- Stay up-to-date with industry trends and best practices in journalism and news production
- Collaborate with other news directors and industry professionals to share knowledge and best practices
- Represent the news department in meetings with station management, advertisers, and other stakeholders
- Ensure that all news content complies with station policies and FCC regulations
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Communications, or related field
- At least 5 years of experience in a newsroom, with at least 2 years in a supervisory or management role
- Strong knowledge of journalism principles and practices
- Excellent communication and leadership skills
- Ability to work well under pressure and meet deadlines
- Strong organizational and time management skills
- Ability to work effectively with a diverse range of people, including reporters, anchors, and other news staff
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Ability to think creatively and develop innovative solutions to challenges
- Strong understanding of the local market and audience
- Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's degree in Journalism, Communications, or related field
- Experience in a large market or major market news organization
- Experience with digital media and social media platforms
- Certification in journalism, such as AP or NABJ
- Bilingual or multilingual skills
Salary Range:
- The salary range for a News Director can vary widely depending on the size and type of station, as well as the location and experience of the candidate. However, here are some general salary ranges:
