New naira design 2022
The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has introduced a new naira design for the N200, N500, and N1,000 banknotes. The new design was launched on December 15, 2022, and is expected to be gradually introduced into circulation over the next few weeks.
Here are some key features of the new naira design:
N200 Banknote:
- The obverse (front) features a portrait of Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, a Nigerian statesman and philosopher.
- The reverse (back) features a collage of Nigerian cultural heritage, including traditional clothing, music, and art.
- The banknote has a blue and green color scheme.
N500 Banknote:
- The obverse features a portrait of Chief Obafemi Awolowo, a Nigerian statesman and politician.
- The reverse features a collage of Nigerian economic and industrial development, including agriculture, manufacturing, and infrastructure.
- The banknote has a green and brown color scheme.
N1,000 Banknote:
- The obverse features a portrait of Alhaji Maimuna Shagari, the wife of former President Shehu Shagari.
- The reverse features a collage of Nigerian cultural and historical landmarks, including the National Monument, the National Assembly, and the Supreme Court.
- The banknote has a purple and gold color scheme.
Common Features:
- All three banknotes have a transparent window to prevent counterfeiting.
- They have a unique serial number and a security thread that glows pink when held under UV light.
- The banknotes also have a 3D effect and a raised print feature to enhance their tactile experience.
The new naira design is part of the CBN's efforts to improve the security and durability of the Nigerian currency, as well as to promote Nigerian culture and heritage.
