Early Life and Education
Godwin Emefiele was born on April 30, 1961, in Igbuzo, Delta State, Nigeria. He hails from the Isoko ethnic group. Emefiele had his primary education at St. Patrick's Primary School, Igbuzo, and later attended the Federal Government College, Warri, for his secondary education.
He earned a Bachelor's degree in Agriculture from the University of Benin in 1984. Emefiele then proceeded to the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, where he obtained a Master's degree in Agricultural Economics in 1987.
Career
Emefiele began his career in the banking industry in 1987 as a Management Trainee at the then Merchant Bank of Nigeria (now Union Bank of Nigeria). He rose through the ranks, becoming a Branch Manager in 1992 and later a Regional Manager in 1995.
In 2001, Emefiele joined Zenith Bank Plc as a Deputy General Manager and was later promoted to the position of General Manager in 2005. He served as the bank's Executive Director, Corporate Banking, from 2009 to 2012.
CBN Governor
On June 3, 2014, Emefiele was appointed as the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) by President Goodluck Jonathan. He took over from Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, who was removed from office. Emefiele was reappointed as CBN Governor by President Muhammadu Buhari in 2019 for a second term, which will expire in 2024.
As CBN Governor, Emefiele has implemented several policies aimed at stabilizing the Nigerian economy, including the introduction of the Anchor Borrowers' Programme, which aims to support small-scale farmers and improve agricultural productivity.
