- Systolic blood pressure (SBP): 90-119 mmHg
- Diastolic blood pressure (DBP): 60-79 mmHg
Elevated Blood Pressure
- SBP: 120-129 mmHg
- DBP: 80-84 mmHg
Stage 1 Hypertension
- SBP: 130-139 mmHg
- DBP: 85-89 mmHg
Stage 2 Hypertension
- SBP: 140-159 mmHg
- DBP: 90-99 mmHg
Stage 3 Hypertension (High Blood Pressure)
- SBP: 160 mmHg or higher
- DBP: 100 mmHg or higher
Additional Categories
- Prehypertension: SBP: 120-129 mmHg, DBP: 80-84 mmHg (at risk for developing hypertension)
- Hypertensive Crisis: SBP: 180 mmHg or higher, DBP: 110 mmHg or higher (emergency situation)
Note:
- The American Heart Association (AHA) and the American College of Cardiology (ACC) recommend using the following blood pressure categories:
- Normal: <120/80 mmHg
- Elevated: 120-129/80-84 mmHg
- Stage 1 Hypertension: 130-139/85-89 mmHg
- Stage 2 Hypertension: 140-159/90-99 mmHg
- Stage 3 Hypertension (High Blood Pressure): ≥160/≥100 mmHg
- The AHA and ACC also recommend using the following categories for blood pressure in children and adolescents:
- Normal: <90th percentile for age, sex, and height
- Elevated: 90th-95th percentile for age, sex, and height
- Stage 1 Hypertension: 95th-99th percentile for age, sex, and height
- Stage 2 Hypertension: ≥99th percentile for age, sex, and height
It's important to note that blood pressure categories can vary depending on the organization or healthcare provider, and that individual results may vary. It's always best to consult with a healthcare professional for personalized guidance on blood pressure management.
