Ice breaker ideas for youth
Here are some fun and engaging icebreaker ideas for youth:
Games
- Two Truths and a Lie: Each participant tells two true statements and one false statement about themselves. The others have to guess which one is the lie.
- Human Bingo: Create bingo cards with different traits, characteristics, or interests (e.g. "has traveled to another country", "speaks more than one language", etc.). Each participant has to find someone who fits each of the characteristics and get them to sign the corresponding square.
- Scavenger Hunt: Create a list of items or challenges that participants have to complete around the room or outside (e.g. "find someone wearing the same color shirt as you", "take a photo with someone who has the same birthday as you", etc.).
- Would You Rather: Present two difficult choices and ask participants which one they would prefer (e.g. "would you rather be able to fly or be able to breathe underwater?", etc.).
Questions
- The Name Game: Have each participant introduce themselves and share a unique fact about themselves that starts with the same letter as their name (e.g. "I'm Alex and I love astronomy").
- What's Your Superpower?: Ask each participant to share what they think their superpower would be and why.
- If You Could...: Ask each participant to share what they would do if they could do anything in the world (e.g. "if you could travel anywhere, where would you go?", etc.).
- What's Your Favorite...: Ask each participant to share their favorite book, movie, music, or hobby.
Creative Activities
- Collaborative Mural: Provide a large piece of paper or whiteboard and ask participants to work together to create a mural that represents their shared interests or values.
- Word Association Game: Have each participant write a word on a piece of paper, fold it up, and pass it to the person on their right. Then, each participant has to say a word that is associated with the word they received.
- Group Storytelling: Start telling a story and then pass it on to the next participant, who continues the story, and so on.
- Self-Portrait Collage: Provide magazines, scissors, and glue, and ask each participant to create a self-portrait collage that represents their personality, interests, or values.
Fun Challenges
- The Human Knot: Have each participant stand in a circle and put their hands in the center. Each participant should grab the hand of someone across from them, not next to them. Then, they have to work together to untangle themselves without letting go of each other's hands.
- Blindfolded Obstacle Course: Set up an obstacle course and have each participant navigate it while blindfolded. The others can provide guidance and support.
- Trust Walk: Have each participant pair up and stand facing each other. One participant closes their eyes and the other has to guide them around the room or outside without touching them.
- Group Dance Challenge: Play a song and ask each participant to come up with a dance move. Then, have them teach the move to the others and see who can come up with the most creative dance.
Remember to choose icebreakers that are age-appropriate and respectful of all participants. The goal is to have fun and build connections, not to make anyone feel uncomfortable or embarrassed.
