Here is the full text of President Muhammadu Buhari's Independence Day broadcast on October 1, 2020:
Fellow Nigerians,
Today, we mark the 60th anniversary of our nation's independence. This milestone is a testament to the resilience and determination of our people, who have overcome numerous challenges to build a nation that is strong, united, and proud.
As we celebrate this milestone, we remember the sacrifices of our founding fathers, who fought for our freedom and worked tirelessly to build a nation that is just, equitable, and prosperous for all.
We also remember the struggles of our past, including the civil war, which tested our unity and resolve. But we have emerged stronger and more united, with a shared commitment to building a better future for ourselves and for generations to come.
As we mark this anniversary, we are reminded of the progress we have made as a nation. We have made significant strides in areas such as education, healthcare, infrastructure, and economic development. We have also made significant progress in the fight against corruption, with the establishment of institutions such as the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.
However, we are also aware that we still have a lot of work to do. We are still grappling with challenges such as poverty, inequality, and insecurity. We are still working to address the legacy of corruption and mismanagement that has held our nation back for so long.
But I am confident that with the collective efforts of our people, we can overcome these challenges and build a brighter future for ourselves and for our children. We have a strong and vibrant economy, with a growing middle class and a thriving private sector. We have a highly educated and skilled workforce, with a strong presence in the global economy.
We also have a rich cultural heritage, with a diverse range of languages, customs, and traditions. We have a strong and resilient people, who have shown time and time again that we can overcome any challenge and achieve great things.
As we mark this anniversary, I want to assure you that my administration is committed to building a nation that is just, equitable, and prosperous for all. We are committed to addressing the challenges that we face, and to building a brighter future for ourselves and for our children.
We will continue to work tirelessly to promote economic growth and development, to improve the lives of our people, and to build a nation that is strong, united, and proud.
We will also continue to work to promote peace and stability, to address the root causes of conflict and violence, and to build a nation that is just and equitable for all.
And we will continue to work to promote our cultural heritage, to preserve our traditions and customs, and to build a nation that is proud of its identity and its history.
In conclusion, I want to thank you all for your hard work and dedication to our nation. I want to thank you for your sacrifices and your commitment to building a better future for ourselves and for our children.
As we mark this anniversary, I want to assure you that my administration is committed to building a nation that is just, equitable, and prosperous for all. We will continue to work tirelessly to promote economic growth and development, to improve the lives of our people, and to build a nation that is strong, united, and proud.
Thank you, and God bless Nigeria.
Long live Nigeria!
Long live the Federal Republic of Nigeria!
God bless us all!
