Federal government agreement on new minimum wage2018
In 2018, the federal government in the United States did not agree on a new minimum wage. However, there were efforts to increase the minimum wage at the state and local levels.
In January 2018, the federal minimum wage was $7.25 per hour, which had been the same since 2009. There were several bills introduced in Congress to increase the minimum wage, including the Raise the Wage Act, which would have gradually increased the minimum wage to $15 per hour by 2024.
However, these efforts were unsuccessful, and the federal minimum wage remained at $7.25 per hour throughout 2018.
Some states and cities did take action to increase their minimum wages, however. For example:
- California increased its minimum wage to $11 per hour in 2018, with future increases planned to reach $15 per hour by 2023.
- New York increased its minimum wage to $15 per hour in 2018, with future increases planned to reach $15.50 per hour by 2021.
- Seattle, Washington increased its minimum wage to $15 per hour in 2018, with future increases planned to reach $16 per hour by 2021.
- Other cities and states, such as Massachusetts, New Jersey, and Oregon, also increased their minimum wages in 2018.
It's worth noting that the federal government has not increased the minimum wage since 2009, and there are ongoing efforts to raise the minimum wage at the federal level.
