EDO POLYTECHNIC WORKERS PROTEST UNPAID SALARIES

Benin City, Edo State - Workers of the Edo State Polytechnic, Usen, have embarked on a peaceful protest to demand payment of their outstanding salaries.

The workers, who are members of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Polytechnics (SSANIP) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU), converged on the polytechnic's premises, carrying placards and banners with inscriptions such as "Pay us our salaries", "We are tired of suffering", and "Government, listen to our plight".

The protest, which began at 8am, was led by the Chairman of SSANIP, Edo State Polytechnic chapter, Mr. Osahon Ogieva, and the Chairman of NASU, Mr. Felix Ogieva.

The workers are demanding payment of their salaries for the months of January, February, and March, which they claimed had been outstanding for several months.

According to the workers, the polytechnic management had promised to pay their salaries, but had failed to do so, leaving them in a state of financial hardship.

"We are tired of being owed salaries. We are tired of suffering. We are tired of being treated like second-class citizens. We demand that our salaries be paid immediately," Mr. Osahon Ogieva said.

The workers also accused the polytechnic management of not providing adequate facilities and infrastructure for them to work effectively.

"We work hard to ensure that the polytechnic runs smoothly, but we are not given the necessary facilities and infrastructure to do our jobs. We demand that the government provides us with the necessary resources to work effectively," Mr. Felix Ogieva said.

The protest, which was peaceful and orderly, was monitored by security personnel from the Edo State Police Command and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).

The polytechnic management was yet to comment on the protest at the time of filing this report.

The workers have vowed to continue their protest until their demands are met.
