Catholic bishops nigeria gets new leaders

A significant development in the Catholic Church in Nigeria!

On January 13, 2023, the Catholic Bishops' Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) held its 58th Plenary Assembly in Abuja, where new leaders were elected to lead the conference for the next three years.

Here are the new leaders:

  1. President: Most Rev. Augustine Akubeze, Archbishop of Benin City, Edo State, was re-elected as the President of the CBCN. He has been serving in this role since 2017.
  2. Vice President: Most Rev. Camillus Umoh, Bishop of Calabar, Cross River State, was elected as the new Vice President of the CBCN.
  3. Secretary General: Rev. Fr. Ralph Madu, a priest of the Diocese of Awka, Anambra State, was elected as the new Secretary General of the CBCN.
  4. Treasurer: Rev. Fr. John Okoye, a priest of the Diocese of Enugu, Enugu State, was elected as the new Treasurer of the CBCN.

These new leaders will serve for a three-year term, from 2023 to 2026. Their election is seen as a significant development in the Catholic Church in Nigeria, as they will play a crucial role in guiding the Church's activities and policies in the country.

The CBCN is the umbrella organization of all Catholic bishops in Nigeria, comprising 57 dioceses and 3 archdioceses. The conference is responsible for promoting the Catholic faith, advocating for social justice, and providing spiritual guidance to the faithful in Nigeria.
