Breaking: Nigerian Government Approves 8 New Universities
The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved the establishment of eight new universities in Nigeria. The decision was made during a meeting of the council, which is the highest decision-making body in the Nigerian government, on Wednesday.
According to a statement issued by the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, the new universities will be located in the following states:
- University of Science and Technology, Ilesa, Osun State
- University of Environmental Studies, Owerri, Imo State
- University of Agriculture and Technology, Mubi, Adamawa State
- University of Education, Science and Technology, Gombe, Gombe State
- University of Technology, Minna, Niger State
- University of Health Sciences, Otukpo, Benue State
- University of Technology, Akure, Ondo State
- University of Education, Science and Technology, Bauchi, Bauchi State
The minister explained that the decision to establish the new universities was taken to address the shortage of universities in the country, particularly in the areas of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
"We have a shortage of universities in the country, and we need to increase the number of universities to cater for the increasing number of students seeking admission," Adamu said.
The minister also disclosed that the government has allocated N1.5 billion for the take-off of the new universities, which will be managed by the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund).
The establishment of the new universities is expected to create more opportunities for Nigerian students to pursue higher education and contribute to the country's economic development.
