Yahoo says one billion accounts exposed in newly discovered security breach
A massive security breach!
According to reports, Yahoo has confirmed that a newly discovered security breach has exposed the personal data of approximately 1 billion user accounts. This is in addition to the 500 million accounts that were previously compromised in a 2013 breach.
The newly discovered breach is believed to have occurred in 2013, around the same time as the previous breach, and is thought to have been carried out by the same group of hackers. The hackers are believed to have gained access to Yahoo's systems by exploiting a vulnerability in the company's email service.
The compromised data includes:
- Usernames
- Passwords (hashed, but potentially crackable)
- Security questions and answers
- Birthdates
- Email addresses
- Phone numbers
- IP addresses
It's worth noting that Yahoo has already notified the affected users and is offering free credit monitoring and identity theft protection for two years.
This breach is a significant reminder of the importance of strong password management, two-factor authentication, and regular security updates. It's also a wake-up call for companies to prioritize cybersecurity and protect their users' sensitive information.
