WAEC Results Decline: Experts Blame Overworked Examiners
The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has reported a decline in the overall performance of students in the 2022 May/June West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE). According to WAEC, the pass rate dropped from 63.98% in 2021 to 62.44% in 2022.
Experts have attributed the decline to the overwork and burnout of examiners, who are responsible for marking the exams. The examiners, who are mostly teachers, have been complaining about the heavy workload and lack of adequate compensation.
The President of the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT), Mr. Anslem Adzube, said that the overwork and stress experienced by examiners can lead to errors and inconsistencies in marking, which can affect the overall performance of students.
"We are calling on the government to address the issue of overwork and underpayment of examiners. If they are not properly motivated, they may not be able to do their job effectively," Adzube said.
The WAEC Registrar, Mr. Patrick Areghan, acknowledged the challenges faced by examiners but assured that the council is working to improve the marking process.
"We are committed to ensuring that the marking process is fair, transparent, and accurate. We are working to reduce the workload of examiners and provide them with the necessary resources to do their job effectively," Areghan said.
The decline in WAEC results has raised concerns about the quality of education in Nigeria and the need for reforms to improve the teaching and learning process.
