Uk student visa new rules 2020
The UK government introduced new rules for student visas in 2020, which aim to improve the quality of education and ensure that international students are properly supported during their studies. Here are some of the key changes:
- Tier 4 (General) Student Visa: The Tier 4 (General) student visa has been replaced by the Student Route. The new route is designed to be more straightforward and easier to apply for.
- English Language Requirement: Students must demonstrate a certain level of English language proficiency, which is measured by their IELTS or equivalent test scores. The minimum scores are:
- IELTS Academic: 4.0 in each component (reading, writing, listening, and speaking)
- IELTS General Training: 4.0 in each component (reading, writing, listening, and speaking)
- Maintenance Funds: Students must demonstrate that they have sufficient funds to support themselves during their studies. The minimum amount required is £1,334 per year, or £1,041 per year for students studying in London.
- Academic Progress: Students must make satisfactory academic progress during their studies. If they fail to do so, their visa may be curtailed or withdrawn.
- Biometric Residence Permit (BRP): Students will receive a BRP card, which is a biometric card that contains their biometric data and visa information.
- Visa Application Process: The visa application process has been simplified, and students can now apply online. They will need to provide biometric data, such as fingerprints, as part of the application process.
- Visa Decision-Making: The UK government has introduced a new system for making visa decisions, which is designed to be more efficient and effective. Decisions will be made within 3 weeks of the application being submitted.
- Student Visa Refusals: The UK government has introduced new rules for student visa refusals. Students who are refused a visa will be given a detailed explanation of the reasons for the refusal and will have the opportunity to appeal.
- Student Visa Appeals: The UK government has introduced a new appeals process for student visa refusals. Students who are refused a visa will have the opportunity to appeal the decision to an independent tribunal.
- Student Visa Extensions: Students who are already in the UK on a student visa can apply to extend their visa for up to 3 years, provided they meet the eligibility criteria.
It's worth noting that these changes apply to students who are applying for a student visa on or after 5 October 2020. Students who applied for a student visa before this date may be subject to different rules and requirements.
