Here are three historical events that occurred on March 3rd:
- 1865 - The Suez Canal, which connects the Mediterranean Sea to the Red Sea through Egypt, is inaugurated. The canal was built by the Suez Canal Company, a French-led consortium, and took over 10 years to complete.
- 1918 - The United States Congress passes the Sedition Act, which makes it a crime to speak out against the government or the war effort during World War I. The act was used to silence anti-war protesters and critics of the government.
- 1969 - The Apollo 9 spacecraft is launched from Kennedy Space Center in Florida, carrying astronauts James McDivitt, David Scott, and Russell Schweickart on a mission to test the Lunar Module. The spacecraft splashed down in the Pacific Ocean on March 13th.
