The new naira notes
You're referring to the newly redesigned naira notes in Nigeria!
The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) introduced new naira notes in November 2021, as part of efforts to combat counterfeiting and improve the country's economy. The new notes are:
- N50 note: The new N50 note features a portrait of Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, a Nigerian statesman and philosopher.
- N100 note: The new N100 note features a portrait of Dr. Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, a Nigerian statesman and leader of the Biafran secessionist movement.
- N200 note: The new N200 note features a portrait of Muhammadu Buhari, the current President of Nigeria.
- N500 note: The new N500 note features a portrait of Dr. Olufunmilayo Ransome-Kuti, a Nigerian educationist and women's rights activist.
- N1000 note: The new N1000 note features a portrait of Alhaji Maimuna Shagari, the wife of former President Shehu Shagari.
The new notes have several security features, including:
- Watermark: A transparent image of the portrait of the featured person is embedded in the paper.
- Security thread: A thin strip of paper with a unique pattern is embedded in the note.
- Hologram: A 3D image of the CBN logo and the portrait of the featured person is embedded in the note.
- Microprinting: Tiny text is printed on the note, which is only visible under magnification.
- Raised printing: The note has raised printing, which gives it a tactile feel.
The introduction of the new naira notes is expected to improve the country's economy by reducing the circulation of counterfeit notes and increasing the use of digital payments.
