Tears as Family Buries AU Student Killed by Suspected Herdsmen
A somber mood engulfed the community as the family of a student of the African University (AU) in Lafia, Nasarawa State, buried their loved one who was brutally killed by suspected herdsmen.
The deceased, identified as 20-year-old Samuel Oche, was a second-year student of the university's Faculty of Agriculture. He was killed on Tuesday evening while returning from a visit to his family in a nearby village.
The family, friends, and colleagues of the deceased gathered at the St. Michael's Anglican Church in Lafia to bid farewell to the young man who was described as a bright and promising student.
As the casket containing the body of Samuel was lowered into the grave, tears flowed freely among the mourners. The atmosphere was heavy with grief and sorrow as the family and friends struggled to come to terms with the tragic loss.
Samuel's father, Mr. Oche, was overcome with emotion as he eulogized his son, describing him as a hardworking and responsible young man who was loved by all who knew him.
"We are devastated by this senseless killing," Mr. Oche said, his voice trembling with grief. "Samuel was a bright star in our family, and his death has left a huge vacuum that cannot be filled."
The university's Vice-Chancellor, Professor Maimako, also paid tribute to the deceased, describing him as a brilliant and dedicated student who was loved by his peers and lecturers.
"We are deeply saddened by this tragic loss," Professor Maimako said. "Samuel was a shining example of the kind of students we have at AU, and his death is a reminder of the challenges we face in our community."
The suspected herdsmen who killed Samuel are still at large, and the police are investigating the incident. The university has promised to provide support to the family and has also called on the government to take concrete steps to address the growing insecurity in the region.
As the mourners dispersed, the community was left to grapple with the senseless killing of a young life that had so much potential. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the need for urgent action to address the growing insecurity in the region and to ensure that such tragedies do not recur.
