Teaching knowledge test tkt starters warmer ice breakers
Here are some warm-up activities, icebreakers, and starters that you can use to begin a Teaching Knowledge Test (TKT) preparation class:
Warm-up Activities:
- Two Truths and a Lie: Each student tells two true statements about themselves and one false statement. The others have to guess which one is the lie.
- Human Bingo: Create bingo cards with different traits, characteristics, or interests (e.g. "has traveled to another country", "speaks more than one language", etc.). Students need to find someone who fits each of the characteristics and get them to sign the corresponding square.
- Word Association Game: Choose a word related to teaching or language learning (e.g. "classroom", "student", "vocabulary", etc.). Ask each student to write down the first word that comes to mind when they hear the word. Then, ask each student to share their word and explain why they chose it.
Icebreakers:
- The Name Game: Have each student introduce themselves and share a unique fact about themselves that starts with the same letter as their name (e.g. "I'm Sarah and I love sailing").
- Scavenger Hunt: Create a list of items or challenges that students need to complete around the classroom or school (e.g. "find someone wearing the same color shirt as you", "take a photo with a teacher", etc.).
- Would You Rather: Prepare a list of "Would You Rather" questions (e.g. "Would you rather have the ability to speak any language fluently or be able to play any musical instrument perfectly?", etc.). Ask each student to choose which option they prefer and explain why.
Starters:
- What's Your Favorite...: Ask students to share their favorite book, movie, TV show, or hobby and why they enjoy it.
- Teaching Experience: Ask students to share a positive or challenging experience they've had while teaching or working with students.
- Language Learning Goals: Ask students to share their goals for improving their language skills or what they hope to achieve through the TKT preparation course.
Remember to keep the activities short and engaging, and to make sure they're relevant to the TKT preparation course. The goal is to help students feel comfortable, build rapport with each other, and get excited about the course ahead!
