The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) is a global leader in the fight against illicit drugs and international crime. It was established in 1997 as a result of the merger between the United Nations Centre for International Crime Prevention and the United Nations Drug Control Programme.
UNODC's mission is to assist its member states in their efforts to overcome the problems posed by illicit drugs, crime and terrorism, and to promote cooperation among them in these areas. The office works to achieve this mission by:
- Providing technical assistance to countries to strengthen their capacities to prevent and combat drug-related crime and terrorism.
- Collecting and analyzing data on drug-related crime and terrorism, and providing information and analysis to support policy-making and decision-making.
- Promoting international cooperation and coordination to combat drug-related crime and terrorism.
- Supporting the development of effective and evidence-based policies and strategies to address drug-related crime and terrorism.
UNODC is headquartered in Vienna, Austria, and has offices in over 80 countries around the world.
