Biography:

Mary Beth Leonard is a career member of the Senior Foreign Service, class of Minister-Counselor. She has served as the Consul General of the United States to Nigeria since August 2017.

Prior to her appointment in Nigeria, Ms. Leonard served as the Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Cairo, Egypt, from 2014 to 2017. She was responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the embassy and serving as the principal deputy to the Ambassador.

Ms. Leonard has also served as the Director of the Office of West African Affairs at the U.S. Department of State in Washington, D.C., from 2011 to 2014. In this role, she was responsible for developing and implementing U.S. policy towards West Africa, including Nigeria.

Ms. Leonard has also served as the Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Accra, Ghana, from 2008 to 2011, and as the Political Officer at the U.S. Embassy in Abuja, Nigeria, from 2005 to 2008.

Ms. Leonard holds a Bachelor's degree in International Relations from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a Master's degree in International Affairs from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). She is fluent in French and Hausa.
