In a penalty shootout, each team takes turns shooting the ball at the opponent's goal, with the goal of scoring more goals than the opposing team. Here are the basic rules:
- Each team takes 5 shots: Each team gets 5 chances to score from the penalty spot.
- Alternating shots: The teams take turns shooting, with the first team shooting first, then the second team, and so on.
- Goalkeeper can move: The goalkeeper can move along the goal line, but cannot move off the line until the ball has been kicked.
- Ball must be kicked: The ball must be kicked forward, not carried or thrown.
- Goalkeeper can save: The goalkeeper can try to save the shot, but if they do, the shot is considered a miss.
- Score is kept: The team with the most goals at the end of the 5 shots wins.
- If tied, sudden death: If the score is tied after 5 shots, the shootout goes into sudden death. The first team to score in sudden death wins the game.
