Tag Landgrabber Sentenced to Three Months in Prison for Beating Up Site Worker in Lagos
A Lagos State High Court has sentenced a tag landgrabber, one Olamide Ogunleye, to three months in prison for beating up a site worker in the state.
Ogunleye was arraigned before Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo on a two-count charge of assault and breach of peace. The prosecution, led by the Lagos State Director of Public Prosecutions, Mr. Kehinde Aina, alleged that Ogunleye, on October 10, 2022, assaulted one Adekunle Ademola, a site worker, at a construction site in the Ikeja area of Lagos.
The court heard that Ogunleye, who was allegedly trying to grab a plot of land belonging to the site owner, attacked Ademola when he (Ademola) tried to stop him from trespassing on the land.
The prosecution presented evidence, including eyewitness testimony and medical reports, to prove that Ogunleye had indeed assaulted Ademola, causing him serious injuries.
In his judgment, Justice Taiwo found Ogunleye guilty of the two counts and sentenced him to three months in prison. The judge also ordered Ogunleye to pay a fine of N50,000.
The court's decision was welcomed by the victim, Ademola, who expressed relief that justice had been served. "I am grateful to the court for taking my case seriously and punishing the perpetrator of the crime," he said.
The Lagos State Government has also commended the court's decision, saying that it sends a strong message to landgrabbers and other criminals that they will be held accountable for their actions.
"We will continue to work tirelessly to protect the rights of our citizens and ensure that those who break the law are brought to justice," said a government spokesperson.
Ogunleye's lawyer, Mr. Adebayo Adeniji, said that his client would appeal the judgment, claiming that the evidence presented by the prosecution was not sufficient to prove his guilt beyond reasonable doubt.
The case has sparked widespread outrage in Lagos, with many calling for stricter measures to be taken against landgrabbers and other criminals who threaten the peace and security of the state.
