FG Warns Electricity Consumers Against Illegal Connections

The Federal Government has warned electricity consumers against illegal connections to the national grid, saying it poses a significant risk to the safety of lives and property.

The Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Mr. Babatunde Fashola, gave the warning while speaking at a stakeholders' meeting on the implementation of the National Electricity Policy in Abuja.

Fashola said that illegal connections, also known as "bunkering," are a major challenge to the power sector, as they compromise the integrity of the grid and put the lives of consumers at risk.

He said that the practice of illegal connections is not only illegal but also dangerous, as it can lead to electrical shocks, fires, and even explosions.

The minister urged electricity consumers to report any illegal connections to the relevant authorities, saying that the government is committed to ensuring that the power sector is safe and reliable.

Fashola also called on electricity distribution companies to take steps to prevent illegal connections, saying that they have a responsibility to ensure that the grid is safe and secure.

The National Electricity Policy, which was launched in 2015, aims to promote the development of the power sector and ensure that electricity is available and affordable to all Nigerians.

The policy sets out a framework for the development of the power sector, including the promotion of private sector participation, the development of renewable energy sources, and the improvement of the transmission and distribution infrastructure.

Fashola said that the government is committed to implementing the policy and ensuring that the power sector is transformed to meet the needs of the country.

He urged electricity consumers to cooperate with the government and the power sector operators to achieve this goal.

The meeting was attended by stakeholders from the power sector, including electricity distribution companies, generation companies, and transmission companies, as well as representatives of the Federal Ministry of Power, Works and Housing.

The stakeholders discussed the challenges facing the power sector and the steps that need to be taken to address them.

They also discussed the implementation of the National Electricity Policy and the role that each stakeholder can play in achieving the policy's objectives.

The meeting was a positive step towards addressing the challenges facing the power sector and ensuring that electricity is available and affordable to all Nigerians.
