Rufus giwa poly shut down students violent protest

Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo, Ondo State, Nigeria was shut down by the management on Monday, October 14, 2019, following a violent protest by students of the institution.

The students, who were protesting against the alleged poor state of infrastructure and inadequate facilities in the institution, became violent and vandalized properties on campus, including the administrative block, lecture halls, and hostels.

The protest, which started peacefully, turned violent when some students allegedly hijacked the protest and began to destroy property and attack security personnel.

The management of the polytechnic, in a statement, condemned the violence and announced the immediate closure of the institution until further notice.

The statement read: "The management of Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo, regrets to announce that the institution has been shut down with immediate effect due to the violent protest that occurred on Monday, October 14, 2019.

"The protest, which started peacefully, took a violent turn when some students allegedly hijacked the protest and began to destroy property and attack security personnel.

"The management of the institution is deeply concerned about the safety of staff and students and has therefore decided to shut down the institution until further notice.

"The management appeals to the students to remain calm and peaceful and to avoid any further violence or destruction of property.

"The institution will continue to engage with the students and other stakeholders to address their concerns and find a lasting solution to the issues that led to the protest."

The closure of the institution is expected to last for an indefinite period until the management and students can find a peaceful resolution to the issues that led to the protest.
