Psalm 40 good news bible

Here is Psalm 40 in the Good News Bible (GNB):

Psalm 40

  1. I waited patiently for the Lord; he turned to me and heard my cry.
  2. He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand.
  3. He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear the Lord, and put their trust in him.
  4. Blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord, who does not look to proud people, who does not boast about their own achievements.
  5. But they who wait for the Lord will inherit the land, and they will possess the land forever.
  6. They will be blessed by the Lord, and they will inherit the land forever.
  7. The Lord will bless them, and they will inherit the land forever.
  8. I said, "I am greatly afflicted; I am worn out from my groaning. All night long I have been crying out in anguish; every morning he hears my voice.
  9. But you, Lord, are a compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger and abounding in love.
  10. You, Lord, will not reject your people, the faithful remnant of Jacob.
  11. For you have shown your people the light of your presence, and you have given them great joy.
  12. You have given them the joy of your presence, and you have given them the joy of your presence.
  13. For you have turned my mourning into dancing; you have taken off my sackcloth and clothed me with joy.
  14. That my heart may sing your praises and not be silent. Lord my God, I will give you thanks forever.
  15. I will bring forth praise to your name, for you have lifted me out of the depths.
  16. You have kept me from falling; you have set my feet in a spacious place.
  17. You have saved me from the attacks of the people; you have kept me safe as a bird from the hunter's snare.
  18. You have covered me with feathers, and under your wings I will hide; your faithfulness will be my shield and protection.
  19. I will not fear the terror of night, nor the arrow that flies by day,
  20. nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness, nor the destruction that wastes at noon.
  21. Though a thousand may fall at my side, near by, but it will not come near me.
  22. For you are my refuge and my shield; you are my glory and the One who lifts my head high.
  23. I will bless the Lord at all times; his praise will be continually in my mouth.
  24. My mouth will speak of your righteousness, of your saving help all day long; though I know not how to speak of your justice, or of your praise all day long.

This psalm is a beautiful expression of trust and praise to God, who has delivered the psalmist from affliction and despair. It is a powerful reminder of God's goodness, compassion, and faithfulness.
