Psalm 17

A Prayer for Protection and Guidance

  1. Hear, O Lord, my plea for mercy. Listen to my cry for help, my King and my God, for I pray to you all day long.
  2. In the morning, Lord, you hear my voice; in the morning, I lay my requests before you and wait expectantly.
  3. For you are not a God who delights in evil nor does he take pleasure in wickedness.
  4. No, the noble things you have planned for those whose hearts are committed to you.
  5. You will show me the path of life, the path of righteousness, my God, and because of your name, I will come to you. I will pray to you, Lord, and you will answer me.
  6. In your steadfast love, hear my cry, and in your righteousness, give me relief.
  7. Do not hide your face from me, do not turn your servant away in anger. You have been my helper; do not abandon me or forsake me, O God of my salvation.
  8. Even though my father and mother have forsaken me, the Lord will receive me.
  9. Show me the way I should go, for to follow you, I lift up my soul.
  10. Rescue me from the trap set by my enemies, from the snares of those who are wicked.
  11. Let the wicked fall into their own nets, while I pass by safely.
  12. I will praise the Lord, who counsels me; even at night my heart instructs me.
  13. I keep the Lord always before me; with him at my right hand, I will not be shaken.
  14. Therefore my heart is glad, and my spirit rejoices; my body also rests secure.
  15. For you will not abandon me to the realm of the dead, nor will you let your faithful one see decay.
  16. You will show me the path of life, the path of righteousness, my God, and because of your name, I will come to you.
  17. I will praise you, Lord, among the nations; I will sing the praises of your name.
  18. You will increase my honor and comfort me once more.
  19. Turn to me and be gracious to me, but show me the wonders of your salvation.
  20. Then those who fear you will take refuge in the shadow of your wings. For you, Lord, are their hope, their strength in times of distress.
