Okorocha challenges inecs power to withhold his certificate of return
A developing story!
According to reports, Senator Rochas Okorocha, the immediate past Governor of Imo State, has challenged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to withhold his Certificate of Return as a Senator-elect.
Okorocha, who was declared the winner of the Imo West Senatorial District election by INEC, has been at loggerheads with the commission over the outcome of the election. He was declared the winner by a slim margin, but his opponent, Senator Hope Uzodinma, has been contesting the result, alleging that the election was marred by irregularities.
INEC had initially declared Uzodinma the winner of the election, but later reversed the decision and declared Okorocha the winner after a court ruling.
However, INEC has now refused to issue Okorocha a Certificate of Return, citing the ongoing legal battle over the election results. This has led Okorocha to challenge INEC's decision, insisting that he is entitled to the certificate as the declared winner of the election.
In a statement, Okorocha's media aide, Sam Onwuemeodo, said: "We are surprised that INEC is still holding on to our Certificate of Return, despite the fact that the court has declared us the winner of the election. We demand that INEC should issue us the Certificate of Return immediately, as we are entitled to it."
The development has sparked controversy, with many calling for INEC to respect the court's decision and issue Okorocha the Certificate of Return. Others have criticized Okorocha for trying to circumvent the legal process and undermine the integrity of the electoral process.
The saga is likely to continue, with both parties digging in their heels and refusing to back down. Only time will tell how this drama plays out!
