Nysc warns corps members against religious indoctrination
The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has warned corps members against engaging in religious indoctrination during their service year.
In a statement issued by the NYSC Director-General, Brigadier General Shuaibu Ibrahim, the corps was reminded that their primary responsibility is to serve the nation and not to proselytize or convert others to their religious beliefs.
The statement reads in part:
"The NYSC wishes to reiterate that the primary objective of the scheme is to promote national unity, cohesion, and development through the service of corps members in various parts of the country. As such, corps members are expected to conduct themselves in a manner that is respectful of the diversity of cultures, religions, and beliefs of the people they serve.
"Corps members are therefore warned against engaging in any activity that may be perceived as religious indoctrination or proselytization. This includes, but is not limited to, distributing religious materials, holding religious meetings or gatherings, or engaging in any other activity that may be seen as an attempt to convert others to a particular religion.
"Corps members are expected to respect the religious beliefs and practices of others and to avoid any behavior that may be seen as disrespectful or divisive. They are also expected to be mindful of the fact that they are representing the NYSC and the nation as a whole, and to conduct themselves in a manner that is consistent with the values and principles of the scheme.
"The NYSC will not tolerate any behavior that is inconsistent with these expectations, and any corps member found to be engaging in religious indoctrination or proselytization will be dealt with accordingly."
This warning is timely and necessary, as it is essential to maintain the neutrality and impartiality of the NYSC. The scheme is a vital instrument for promoting national unity and development, and it is crucial that corps members conduct themselves in a manner that is respectful of the diversity of cultures, religions, and beliefs of the people they serve.
