Nysc suspends on going orientation course
According to recent reports, the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has suspended its ongoing orientation course for the 2022 Batch 'C' Stream II corps members.
The suspension was announced by the NYSC Director-General, Brigadier General Mohammed Fadah, in a statement on Tuesday, March 14, 2023. The decision was taken due to the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the scarcity of fuel in the country.
The statement read: "Following the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the scarcity of fuel in the country, the NYSC has been forced to suspend the ongoing orientation course for the 2022 Batch 'C' Stream II corps members."
The NYSC DG further stated that the suspension is aimed at ensuring the safety and well-being of the corps members, as well as the staff of the scheme. He assured that the orientation course will resume as soon as the strike is called off and the fuel scarcity is addressed.
It's worth noting that the ASUU strike has been ongoing since February 14, 2022, and has affected academic activities in many universities across the country. The strike was called off by the union in November 2022, but it resumed in January 2023 after negotiations with the government broke down.
The NYSC suspension is a significant development, as the orientation course is a crucial part of the service year for corps members. The course is designed to equip them with skills and knowledge necessary for their service year and beyond.
