Northern governors forum condemns 30 day ultimatum to igbos #
The Northern Governors' Forum has condemned the 30-day ultimatum given to the Igbo people by some northern youths, saying it is unacceptable and capable of causing chaos and instability in the country.
The forum, which is made up of the 19 governors of the northern states, made this known in a statement issued on Tuesday in Abuja, the nation's capital.
The statement was signed by the Chairman of the forum, Governor Abdulaziz Yari of Zamfara State.
The forum said it was shocked and dismayed by the ultimatum, which was given by some northern youths under the aegis of the Arewa Youth Consultative Forum (AYCF).
The AYCF had given the Igbo people a 30-day ultimatum to leave the northern part of the country, citing the quit notice given to the Fulani herdsmen by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) as the reason for their action.
The Northern Governors' Forum, however, said that the ultimatum was unacceptable and would not be tolerated in a democratic society.
"We condemn in strong terms the 30-day ultimatum given to the Igbo people by some northern youths," the statement said. "This is unacceptable and capable of causing chaos and instability in the country.
"We believe that the ultimatum is a threat to the unity and stability of the country and we will not tolerate it. We call on all Nigerians to remain calm and peaceful and to reject this ultimatum in its entirety."
The forum also called on the Federal Government to take immediate action to address the issue and prevent any breakdown of law and order.
"We urge the Federal Government to take immediate action to address this issue and prevent any breakdown of law and order," the statement said. "We also call on all Nigerians to remain calm and peaceful and to reject this ultimatum in its entirety."
The Northern Governors' Forum also appealed to the Igbo people to remain calm and not to take any action that could lead to violence.
"We appeal to the Igbo people to remain calm and not to take any action that could lead to violence," the statement said. "We also appeal to the Federal Government to take immediate action to address this issue and prevent any breakdown of law and order."
The forum also called on all Nigerians to come together to promote peace and unity in the country.
"We call on all Nigerians to come together to promote peace and unity in the country," the statement said. "We believe that we are stronger together and that we can achieve more by working together than by working against each other."
