- N500 note: Features a portrait of Obafemi Awolowo, a Nigerian politician and statesman.
- N1,000 note: Features a portrait of Moshood Abiola, a Nigerian businessman and politician.
New Coins:
- 50 kobo coin: Features a portrait of Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe.
- N1 coin: Features a portrait of Dr. Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu.
- N2 coin: Features a portrait of Muhammadu Buhari.
- N5 coin: Features a portrait of Obafemi Awolowo.
The new currency was introduced to combat counterfeiting and to make it easier to identify genuine banknotes. The new notes and coins also feature advanced security features, such as watermarks, holograms, and micro-printing, to prevent counterfeiting.
