Nigeria new currency notes 2023
As of 2023, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has introduced new currency notes in Nigeria. The new notes are designed to be more secure and feature advanced security features to prevent counterfeiting.
Here are the details of the new currency notes:
New Naira Notes:
- N50 Note: The new N50 note features a portrait of Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, a Nigerian statesman and philosopher, on the obverse (front) side. The reverse (back) side features a picture of the Nigerian coat of arms.
- N100 Note: The new N100 note features a portrait of Dr. Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, a Nigerian statesman and politician, on the obverse side. The reverse side features a picture of the Nigerian national flag.
- N200 Note: The new N200 note features a portrait of Dr. Muhammadu Buhari, the current President of Nigeria, on the obverse side. The reverse side features a picture of the Nigerian national emblem.
- N500 Note: The new N500 note features a portrait of Dr. Olufunmilayo Ransome-Kuti, a Nigerian educationist and women's rights activist, on the obverse side. The reverse side features a picture of the Nigerian national anthem.
- N1000 Note: The new N1000 note features a portrait of Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, a Nigerian statesman and philosopher, on the obverse side. The reverse side features a picture of the Nigerian national coat of arms.
Security Features:
The new currency notes feature advanced security features to prevent counterfeiting, including:
- Watermark: A transparent image of the portrait of the featured personality is embedded in the paper.
- Security Thread: A thin strip of paper with a unique pattern is embedded in the note.
- Raised Printing: The notes feature raised printing of the portrait and other design elements.
- Micro-Printing: The notes feature micro-printed text and patterns that are difficult to reproduce.
- Color-Shifting Ink: The notes feature color-shifting ink that changes color when viewed from different angles.
Old Currency Notes:
The old currency notes (N5, N10, N20, N50, N100, N200, N500, and N1000) are still valid and can be used until further notice. However, it is recommended to exchange them for the new currency notes as soon as possible to avoid any inconvenience.
Exchange of Old Currency Notes:
The CBN has set up a special exchange program for the old currency notes. You can exchange your old notes for new ones at any commercial bank or at the CBN headquarters in Abuja.
