New waec grading system
The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has introduced a new grading system for its examinations, effective from 2020. The new grading system is designed to provide a more accurate and comprehensive assessment of students' performance.
Here are the key features of the new WAEC grading system:
- Letter Grades: The new system uses letter grades instead of the traditional numerical grades. The letter grades are:
- A1 (70-100%)
- B2 (60-69%)
- B3 (50-59%)
- C4 (40-49%)
- C5 (30-39%)
- D7 (20-29%)
- E8 (10-19%)
- F9 (0-9%)
- Grade Points: Each letter grade is assigned a grade point, which is used to calculate the overall grade point average (GPA). The grade points are:
- A1: 5 grade points
- B2: 4 grade points
- B3: 3 grade points
- C4: 2 grade points
- C5: 1 grade point
- D7: 0 grade points
- E8: -1 grade point
- F9: -2 grade points
- GPA Calculation: The GPA is calculated by adding the grade points of all subjects and dividing by the total number of subjects. The GPA is then rounded to two decimal places.
- Pass Mark: The pass mark remains the same, which is 30% for all subjects.
- Minimum Requirements: The minimum requirements for passing a subject remain the same, which is 30% for all subjects.
Here's an example of how the new grading system works:
Suppose a student takes 5 subjects and scores:
- English Language: A1 (80%)
- Mathematics: B2 (65%)
- Biology: C4 (45%)
- Chemistry: C5 (35%)
- Physics: D7 (25%)
The student's grade points would be:
- English Language: 5 grade points
- Mathematics: 4 grade points
- Biology: 2 grade points
- Chemistry: 1 grade point
- Physics: 0 grade points
The student's total grade points would be: 5 + 4 + 2 + 1 + 0 = 12
The student's GPA would be: 12/5 = 2.40
The student would have a GPA of 2.40, which is equivalent to a B+ grade.
The new WAEC grading system is designed to provide a more accurate and comprehensive assessment of students' performance, and it is expected to improve the quality of education in West Africa.
