As of my knowledge cutoff, the most recent prime number discovered is M82589937, which was discovered in 2018 by a team of researchers using a distributed computing project called the Great Internet Mersenne Prime Search (GIMPS).
M82589937 is a Mersenne prime, which is a prime number that can be written in the form 2^p - 1, where p is also a prime number. In this case, p = 24,733,153.
This prime number has 24,862,048 digits and is the 51st known Mersenne prime. It was discovered on January 7, 2018, by a computer running the GIMPS software.
