New naira notes design 2022
The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has introduced new naira notes designs for the N200, N500, and N1,000 denominations. The new designs were unveiled in November 2021 and are expected to be in circulation by the end of 2022.
Here are the new designs:
N200 Note:
- The obverse (front) features a portrait of Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, a Nigerian statesman and philosopher.
- The reverse (back) features a collage of Nigerian cultural heritage, including traditional clothing, music, and art.
- The note has a blue and green color scheme.
N500 Note:
- The obverse features a portrait of Dr. Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, a Nigerian statesman and leader of the Biafran secessionist movement.
- The reverse features a collage of Nigerian agricultural and natural resources, including cocoa, palm oil, and natural gas.
- The note has a green and yellow color scheme.
N1,000 Note:
- The obverse features a portrait of Dr. Muhammadu Buhari, the current President of Nigeria.
- The reverse features a collage of Nigerian industrial and technological achievements, including the construction of the Lagos-Kano railway and the development of the Nigerian oil industry.
- The note has a purple and gold color scheme.
The new designs aim to promote Nigerian culture, heritage, and achievements, and to reduce counterfeiting. The CBN has also introduced new security features, including:
- Watermarks
- Security threads
- Raised printing
- Microprinting
- Color-shifting ink
The new naira notes are expected to be widely accepted by the public and will replace the existing designs in circulation.
