Move Beyond Deregistration, Strategize for Better Nigeria: Coalition Urges Deregistered Parties

The Coalition of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) has called on deregistered political parties in Nigeria to move beyond the setback and strategize for a better future for the country.

The coalition, comprising over 100 CSOs, made this call in a statement issued on Tuesday, following the deregistration of 74 political parties by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) last week.

The statement, signed by the coalition's convener, Eze Onyekwere, urged the deregistered parties to use the opportunity to re-strategize and rebrand themselves, rather than giving up.

"We urge the deregistered parties to see this as an opportunity to re-strategize, rebrand, and reposition themselves for a better future. We believe that this setback can be a blessing in disguise, as it presents an opportunity for them to re-examine their ideologies, re-organize their structures, and re-engage with the Nigerian people," the statement said.

The coalition also urged the deregistered parties to work together with other stakeholders to build a stronger and more inclusive political landscape in Nigeria.

"We urge the deregistered parties to work together with other stakeholders, including civil society organizations, the media, and the international community, to build a stronger and more inclusive political landscape in Nigeria. We believe that this is the only way to ensure that the country's political system is truly representative of the people and their aspirations," the statement said.

The coalition also called on INEC to ensure that the deregistration of the parties is done in a transparent and fair manner, and that the affected parties are given adequate notice and support to re-register.

"We urge INEC to ensure that the deregistration of the parties is done in a transparent and fair manner, and that the affected parties are given adequate notice and support to re-register. We believe that this is essential to maintaining the integrity and credibility of the electoral process in Nigeria," the statement said.

The coalition's call comes as the deregistered parties are seeking to appeal the decision of INEC to deregister them. The parties have argued that the deregistration is unfair and that it is an attempt to stifle their political activities.

The deregistration of the parties has sparked controversy in Nigeria, with many arguing that it is an attempt to limit the number of political parties in the country and to give an advantage to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The coalition's call for the deregistered parties to re-strategize and rebrand themselves is seen as an attempt to promote a more inclusive and competitive political landscape in Nigeria.
