Matthew 1

1 This is the record of the ancestors of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham:

2 Abraham was the father of Isaac, Isaac the father of Jacob, Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers, 3 Judah the father of Perez and Zerah (whose mother was Tamar), Perez the father of Hezron, Hezron the father of Ram, 4 Ram the father of Amminadab, Amminadab the father of Nahshon, Nahshon the father of Salmon, 5 Salmon the father of Boaz (whose mother was Rahab), Boaz the father of Obed (whose mother was Ruth), Obed the father of Jesse, 6 Jesse the father of King David. David was the father of Solomon (whose mother was Uriah's wife), 7 Solomon the father of Rehoboam, Rehoboam the father of Abijah, Abijah the father of Asa, 8 Asa the father of Jehoshaphat, Jehoshaphat the father of Joram, Joram the father of Uzziah, 9 Uzziah the father of Jotham, Jotham the father of Ahaz, Ahaz the father of Hezekiah, 10 Hezekiah the father of Manasseh, Manasseh the father of Amon, Amon the father of Josiah, 11 Josiah the father of Jeconiah and his brothers (at the time of the exile to Babylon). 12 After the exile to Babylon: Jeconiah was the father of Shealtiel, Shealtiel the father of Zerubbabel, 13 Zerubbabel the father of Abiud, Abiud the father of Eliakim, Eliakim the father of Azor, 14 Azor the father of Zadok, Zadok the father of Akim, Akim the father of Eliud, 15 Eliud the father of Eleazar, Eleazar the father of Matthan, Matthan the father of Jacob, 16 Jacob the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary, who gave birth to Jesus, who is called the son of God.

Matthew 2

1 Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea during the reign of King Herod of Judea. At that time the Roman emperor, Augustus, issued a decree that a census be taken throughout the Roman Empire. 2 This was the first census taken while Quirinius was governor of Syria. 3 All the people went to their own towns to register for the census. 4 And because Joseph was a descendant of King David, he had to go to Bethlehem and register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him. (She was the virgin daughter of David.) 5 While they were there, the time came for Mary to have her baby. 6 She gave birth to her firstborn son, wrapped him in cloths, and laid him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them.

7 Then a group of wise men from the East arrived in Jerusalem, asking, 8 "Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star when it rose, and we have come to worship him." 9 When King Herod heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him. 10 He called a meeting of the leading priests and teachers of the law, asking them where the Messiah was to be born. 11 "You are the experts in Scripture," he said. "Where is the Messiah supposed to be born?"

12 "In Bethlehem," they replied, "for this is what the prophet wrote:

13 'But you, Bethlehem, are not the least important town in Judah, for a ruler will come from you, whose origins are from old, from ancient times.'"

14 Then Herod called for the wise men to come to him, asking, 15 "Go to Bethlehem and make sure to find out where the baby is. Report back to me so I can go and worship him too." 16 The wise men listened to what the king and then set out for Bethlehem. The star they had seen in the East guided them to the place where the child was. 17 When they saw the star, they were overjoyed. 18 They entered the house and saw the child with his mother, Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasure chests and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.

19 And so, according to the prophecy, the wise men worshiped Jesus, the child who was born to save the world.
