Lauren Morelli is an American writer and producer, best known for her work on the Netflix series "Orange is the New Black". She was a writer and producer on the show for six seasons, from 2013 to 2019.
Morelli was born in 1982 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She grew up in a family of artists and writers, and was encouraged to pursue her creative interests from a young age. She studied English and creative writing at the University of Pennsylvania, and later earned an MFA in creative writing from the University of Michigan.
After graduating from college, Morelli worked as a writer and editor for several years, publishing short stories and essays in various literary magazines. In 2012, she was hired as a writer and producer on "Orange is the New Black", which was created by Jenji Kohan and based on the memoir "Orange Is the New Black: My Year in a Women's Prison" by Piper Kerman.
During her time on "Orange is the New Black", Morelli wrote and produced many episodes of the show, including some of the most critically acclaimed and popular episodes. She was also responsible for developing the characters and storylines of several of the show's main characters, including Piper Chapman (played by Taylor Schilling) and Alex Vause (played by Laura Prepon).
In addition to her work on "Orange is the New Black", Morelli has also written and produced several other TV shows and films, including the Netflix series "I Am the Night" and the feature film "When We Rise". She has also published several short stories and essays in literary magazines and anthologies.
Morelli is openly gay and has been an advocate for LGBTQ+ rights and representation in media. She has also been an advocate for women's rights and has spoken out about issues such as gender equality and reproductive rights.
In 2016, Morelli married Samira Wiley, an actress who played the character Poussey Washington on "Orange is the New Black". The couple has two children together and currently lives in Los Angeles.
