Lagos Woman Docked for Assaulting Son
A Lagos State Magistrates' Court has remanded a 35-year-old woman, Mrs. Nkechi Nwosu, in prison custody for allegedly assaulting her 15-year-old son, Chukwuemeka Nwosu.
The incident occurred on January 15, 2023, at their residence in the Ejigbo area of Lagos.
According to the police prosecutor, Inspector Oladele Adebayo, the defendant assaulted her son with a wooden spoon, causing him severe injuries.
Adebayo told the court that the defendant had been having a disagreement with her son over his academic performance, which led to the assault.
The prosecutor said the defendant was arrested and charged with assault occasioning harm, contrary to Section 171 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge and was remanded in prison custody pending the outcome of the case.
The magistrate, Mrs. O. A. Adelaja, adjourned the case to February 22, 2023, for further hearing.
The police prosecutor urged the court to remand the defendant in prison custody to prevent her from interfering with the investigation and to ensure her appearance in court for the next hearing.
The defendant's lawyer, Mr. O. A. Ogunleye, however, prayed the court to grant his client bail, citing her age and the fact that she was a first-time offender.
The magistrate, however, refused the bail application, citing the seriousness of the offense and the need to ensure the defendant's appearance in court for the next hearing.
The case has been adjourned to February 22, 2023, for further hearing.
