Lagos attributes ilashe boat mishap overloading illegal jetty

According to reports, the Lagos State Government has attributed the recent boat mishap that occurred at Ilashe, a coastal community in Lagos, to overloading and the use of an illegal jetty.

The incident occurred on Sunday, February 21, 2021, when a boat carrying passengers and goods capsized in the waters off Ilashe, resulting in the loss of several lives and injuries to many others.

The Lagos State Government, through its Commissioner for Waterways, Mr. Abdulraheed Muhiyidin, attributed the cause of the accident to overloading and the use of an illegal jetty.

Muhiyidin stated that the boat was overloaded with passengers and goods, which made it difficult for the vessel to navigate safely. He also noted that the jetty used by the boat was not licensed by the Lagos State Government, which made it illegal.

The Commissioner emphasized that the Lagos State Government is committed to ensuring the safety of lives and property on its waterways, and that it will continue to take measures to prevent such accidents from occurring in the future.

The incident has sparked outrage and calls for stricter regulations on boat operations in Lagos, with many calling for the government to take immediate action to prevent similar incidents from happening again.

It is worth noting that the Lagos State Government has been working to improve the safety of its waterways, including the establishment of a waterways authority to regulate boat operations and ensure compliance with safety standards.

In the aftermath of the incident, the government has launched an investigation into the cause of the accident and has promised to take appropriate action against those found to be responsible.
